Event Details

We invite you to visit the 3rd annual STAR-TIDES* Fall field demonstration in Washington, DC at the National Defense University (NDU) campus from Tuesday, October 6 to Friday, October 9.

This event will be live all week, so please feel free to visit anytime during normal working hours to interact, see, and discuss the policies, practices, technologies, and organizations that affect Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief, Stabilization and Reconstruction, Building Partnership Capacity, and Defense Support to Civil Authorities.  All activities will be independent of the power grid, and communications will be live. This event will feature active demonstrations in the following scenarios:

Stabilization and Reconstruction in Afghanistan - Many individuals and organizations who are currently working in Afghanistan will be here to discuss and share ideas.  This will focus largely on the Distributed Essential Services - Afghanistan (DES-A) project, info sharing/sensemaking, distributed renewable energy, links to the Fab Lab near Jalalabad, near-real-time delivery of imagery and information without caveats to NGOs, and infrastructure solutions that are appropriate.

-    Disaster relief in the US - Based on a natural or man-made disaster scenario in the National Capital Region.

-    Building Partnership Capacity in Refugee Camp Environment - family-sized solution sets oriented towards hot, dry areas.  Includes integrated solar and combustion cooking, distributed renewable power, water pasteurization bags,  low-cost and low-power consumption information and communications technology (ICT) equipment.

-   Disaster relief in Tropical Regions (Central America and Western Pacific) -a camp-sized infrastructure set for wet, tropical regions that includes wind and solar power solutions, water purification units, disaster management software, etc.

To visit the demo for an hour or two during the week, please enter your information using the "Visitor" box.

To be a full participant, demonstrate ideas and technologies throughout the week,  please click "Exhibitor" above, and we will contact you.

Demo will be open from 8-5 each day.   (We highly recommend using the Metro (subway).  The Waterfront-SEU stop is just north of Fort McNair and is a 15 minutes walk.  If you must drive, then please park at the new Lincoln Hall lot.  Detailed directions are available here http://www.ndu.edu/info/visitingNDU.cfm

*STAR-TIDES = Sustainable Technologies, Accelerated Research - Transformative Innovation for Development and Emergency Support

STAR-TIDES is an international research effort that promotes affordable, sustainable support to stressed populations – post-war, post-disaster, or impoverished, in foreign or domestic contexts, for short-term or long-term (multi-year) operations. The project provides reach-back “knowledge on demand” to decision-makers and those working in the field. It uses public-private partnerships and “whole-of-government” approaches to encourage unity of effort among diverse organizations where there is no unity of command, and facilitates inter-agency and international engagement. STAR-TIDES has three main goals, to:

1. Enhance the ability of civilian coalitions (business, government and civil society) to operate in stressed environments

2. Extend the military’s ability to work with civilian stakeholders

3. Economize by identifying low-cost logistic solutions and rationalizing supply chains.
